1I was thinking about my religious beliefs while eating dinner with my mom and dad at a nice Chinese restaurant, and I came to this conclusion:
The reason I’m a Christian and a believer in God and Christ (or more generally, the reason I’m religious) ISN’T that I think Christianity holds the explanation for the universe that’s most likely to be true. In fact, I don’t really know what explanation is most likely to be true. I don’t have enough first-hand experience. I’ll admit that science’s explanations hold the most theoretical weight, by most accounts.
The reason I’m religious (more specifically, Christian) is because that’s the one explanation that makes me want to keep on living; it’s the explanation I want most to be true; its the explanation that makes me happy to live in this universe. I don’t WANT science to be right about the Big Bang having a simple scientific reason for happening. I don’t WANT science to be right about things only having meaning when humans give them meaning. Maybe some atheists claim to be fine with the universe being an open-ended sandbox with no endgame, but that’s something I will NEVER accept.
If the universe has no built-in purpose or goal or meaning, than why in heaven’s name would I be satisfied with it?
That’s why I’m religious.
That’s why I’m a Christian.
That’s why I believe in God!
